We’re delighted to share that Penstock Tunnel is now reopen to pedestrians and cyclists, following six weeks of essential improvement works.
This is a big step forward in making the tunnel feel safer, more attractive, and more welcoming for everyone walking or cycling between Wood Green, Alexandra Park and Hornsey.
🔧 What’s been done so far
As of 1 September 2025, the following works have been completed:
✅ Drainage upgrades by Network Rail/Amco Griffen to fix long-standing water issues
✅ Resurfacing inside the tunnel, including granite setts, tactile paving, block paving and asphalting
✅ New lighting units installed throughout the tunnel, improving visibility and safety
✅ Works to the west entrance finished, improving surfaces and drainage
✅ At the east entrance, clearance of old planters, removal of dangerous branches, and excavation of a new rain garden with drainage installed 🌧️🌱

🚧 Restrictions while works continue
While the tunnel is open again, please note:
🚲 Cyclists must dismount before entering. All users are sharing the same path for now, and space is reduced until works are fully complete.
These restrictions will stay in place until November 2025, when the final landscaping and public realm improvements are finished.
🌟 What’s still to come
By November, you’ll also see:
A revitalised eastern entrance with sustainable urban drainage, new planting and play features 🌸
A new boundary fence
A permanent piece of public artwork, designed by artist Emma Smith in collaboration with local residents, schools and community groups 🎨
🙏 Thank you
We know the six-week closure over the summer was disruptive, and we’re grateful for your patience. These works have been shaped by years of community input – from walking workshops with residents and businesses, to creative sessions with Heartlands School, and safety workshops with the Metropolitan Police.
