We wanted to update you on a proposal that could bring some changes to Inderwick Road during school run hours – and, most importantly, invite you to share your views.

Haringey Council is consulting on the introduction of a School Street for Hornsey School for Girls. This would mean restricting vehicle access on Inderwick Road (between Weston Park and Tottenham Lane) during weekday drop-off and pick-up times in term time – 8–9am and 2.45–3.45pm.

During these times, the road would become a pedestrian and cycle zone. The aim is to create a safer, cleaner, and calmer environment at the school gates – something that’s been seen in other parts of the borough where similar schemes are already in place.

What’s being proposed?

If the scheme goes ahead:

  • Inderwick Road would be closed to motor vehicles during the times above, Monday to Friday, term time only.

  • Residents and businesses within the School Street zone would be able to apply for up to two free exemptions.

  • Other exemptions would apply for Blue Badge holders, pupils with disabilities, medical visitors, and school vehicles.

  • Emergency services would continue to have full access.

  • Vehicles would still be able to exit the School Street at any time; the restriction applies only to entering.

What’s the idea behind School Streets?

The Council’s aim is to:

  • Improve air quality

  • Reduce road danger and congestion

  • Encourage more children to walk, cycle, or wheel to school

School Streets are also part of a wider effort across Haringey to support active travel and respond to the climate emergency.

As your local councillors, we’re supportive of the principle of School Streets and the benefits they can bring. But it’s also important that these changes work for the community – and that’s why your feedback is so vital.

How to have your say

The Council’s consultation is now open and runs until 2 May 2025. You can take part here: 👉 www.haringey.gov.uk/school-street-have-your-say

Alternatively, you can return the paper questionnaire that was posted to local residents and businesses – no stamp needed.

If you have any questions or need help responding, you can contact the School Streets team directly at:

What happens next?

After the consultation closes, the Council will review all responses and make a decision later in the spring. If the scheme moves forward, further statutory consultation will follow in the summer, with implementation potentially from November 2025.

We’re here to help if you want to talk through the plans or ask any questions. Ultimately, it’s your neighbourhood – and your say matters.
