I’m proud to share some fantastic news for our borough—Haringey’s Youth Justice Service (YJS) has been awarded a ‘Good’ rating, with Outstanding elements, following a recent inspection by His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Probation.

A massive thanks to the service staff for their incredible hard work under the leadership of Ann Graham, Cllr Zena Brabazon and Cllr Ajda Ovat.

This achievement is a testament to the dedication of officers and staff working to support young people, prevent reoffending, and keep our communities safe. It also reflects this Labour administration’s commitment to investing in early intervention, rehabilitation, and providing second chances to those who need them. Our people are our most important asset and we will step in and step up to support them.

Why This Matters for Hornsey and Haringey

The Youth Justice Service plays a vital role in working with children and young people who have been involved in the criminal justice system or are at risk of offending. By providing tailored support, education, and rehabilitation opportunities, the service helps steer young people towards positive futures—which benefits all of us by making our community safer and more cohesive.

What the Inspectors Said

The report highlighted:

‘Outstanding’ leadership and governance – ensuring the service is well-managed, well-funded, and focused on what works.

Strong partnerships – working closely with schools, social services, health professionals, and police to provide wraparound support.

Effective rehabilitation programmes – helping young people get back on track with education, training, and mental health support.

Chief Inspector of Probation Justin Russell praised Haringey YJS for its child-focused approach, stating:

"Haringey YJS can be rightfully proud of the work it is delivering. The service works alongside multiple vibrant and diverse community-based organisations which provide extensive services for children and their families."

A Labour Council Delivering for Our Youth

This success reflects the values of this Labour administration—we believe in opportunity, rehabilitation, and giving every young person the chance to succeed.

We know that prevention is always better than punishment, which is why we:

🔴 Invest in youth services to keep young people engaged and supported.

🔴 Work closely with schools and families to tackle the root causes of offending.

🔴 Prioritise early intervention over harsher enforcement, because we know that given the right support, young people can turn their lives around.

By making sure young people get the help they need, we create a safer, stronger community for everyone in Hornsey and beyond.

Looking Ahead

While this ‘Good’ rating is fantastic news, we’re not stopping here.

With continued investment, partnership working, and a focus on what works, we’re determined to push for an ‘Outstanding’ rating across the board in the years to come.

If you have thoughts on youth services in our area or want to learn more about how we’re supporting young people, please feel free to get in touch.

Together, we can keep making Haringey a better place for all.
