Councils must have the power to say no to gambling shops 🎰🚫

We’re proud to have signed Dawn Butler’s letter calling on Keir Starmer to scrap the “aim to permit” rule and finally give councils real power to stop new gambling premises opening in our communities. ✍️

Right now, the law is stacked the wrong way.

The “aim to permit” rule from the 2005 Gambling Act effectively forces councils to approve new betting shops and slot machine venues — even when there are serious concerns locally. (The Guardian)

And time and again, we see where these premises end up:

➡️ clustered on high streets

➡️ concentrated in more deprived areas

➡️ targeting some of our poorest and most vulnerable residents

That is not right. As local councillors in Hornsey, we know our communities. We see the impact on families, on high streets, and on residents already facing real financial pressures. And yet, under the current system, our ability to act is far too limited.

We MUST end “aim to permit”.

Councils should have the power to:

👉 say no where there is clear local harm

👉 protect high streets from over-concentration

👉 stand up for residents — not be overruled by outdated legislation

This is about fairness. It’s about public health. And it’s about giving local communities a real voice.

We are elected to represent people in Hornsey and where you are against more gambling shops – your voices should be heard.

We’ll keep pushing for change — alongside colleagues across the country — until councils are properly empowered to protect the places we serve. 💪
