I recently had the pleasure of visiting St Mary’s Church Tower for the first time – one of Hornsey’s most historic landmarks and a real treasure in our community.

Welcomed by Peter and Chris from the Friends of Hornsey Church Tower, it was wonderful to hear about the fantastic work done over the years preserving the site and hosting community events, including during the Crouch End Festival.
The Tower itself dates back to the early 1500s and is one of the few remaining parts of the original medieval church. It stands proudly in what was once the village of Hornsey – the oldest in London – and continues to be a focal point for local life. Personally I get a burst of joy every time I see those colourful Christmas lights!
We had a great conversation about the Garden of Remembrance, the cycle path, use of the park space, and the importance of maintenance and care to keep the site welcoming for all. The Friends group’s passion and commitment to this space really stood out.

I also climbed the stairs up the Tower and was rewarded with a truly incredible view across Hornsey and beyond. If you’ve never been to the top, I’d highly recommend it – it gives a whole new perspective on the area.

Thanks again to Peter, Chris, and the whole Friends team for your time and for everything you do to care for this special place.
I’ll definitely be back – and I hope more residents take the opportunity to visit and enjoy what St Mary’s Tower has to offer.
