Many of you have been in touch over recent months to share your concerns about the North Eight pub. We want to thank you for every message, as your experiences have been vital in building the case for action.

📋 What’s happened so far

  • Back in March, we requested a Licensing Review, believing the licence holder was failing to meet their obligations – especially around crime and disorder.

  • A public consultation followed, and the case went before the Council’s Licensing Sub-Committee.

  • The licence holder repeatedly delayed proceedings (with hearings scheduled for 16 June, 7 July, and 17 July, each adjourned at the last minute).

  • At the 5 August hearing, the licence holder again tried to delay. When the request was refused, they and their lawyer walked out. The hearing continued regardless.

I attended each hearing and made the case for revocation of the licence, citing a sustained and unacceptable pattern of failures.

You can watch my representations to the Licensing Sub-Committee here:

✅ The outcome

After initially proposing only tighter licence conditions, both the police and the Council’s licensing officers eventually agreed with us: the licence should be revoked.

In early August, we received confirmation that the Sub-Committee has decided to revoke the North Eight licence.

⚖️ Appeal lodged

Unfortunately, the licence holder has submitted an appeal. This means the committee’s decision to revoke the licence is now paused until the case is heard in the magistrates’ court.

We know this is deeply frustrating, especially as subsequent nights at the pub are some of the worst there have been in terms of disruption. Unfortunately, we have no legal powers to speed up or influence this appeals process, and the Council has no control over the magistrates’ court or its timeline.

⏳ What happens next

The police do retain the power to issue a closure notice if they judge the legal threshold is met – and they’ve confirmed this has been under active consideration in the past. Given North Eight’s record as one of the borough’s most problematic venues we are constantly liaising with the police to push for further action, but it must be stressed that they will take any decision independently of us as your Councillors.

🙏 Thank you

We know many of you will share our frustration that North Eight may continue trading despite the decision. Unfortunately, the law leaves us with limited powers at this stage.

But please know this: we will keep fighting to protect residents and local businesses from the disruption linked to this premises.

Your voices have been central to this outcome – and we’ll keep pressing for action until this is fully resolved.
